Newspapers and commentators often talk about state-sponsored hacking programs by the Russian government. However, experts say that China is also a culprit in recent attacks. This sobering news makes it more important than ever to do everything in your power to protect the privacy of your customers and sensitive company data.

On Time Tech, A San Francisco-based IT consulting firm offers comprehensive cybersecurity services to help you block out hackers and combat mobile phone security issues.

How Long Has China Been Hacking U.S. Targets?

Evidence shows that China has been targeting other countries for cyberattacks at least since 2013. That's when they targeted companies in Southeast Asia, according to ethical hackers at Palo Alto Networks. These companies include Taiwan, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia — all of whom have tense relationships with China.

Using Plug X malware concealed inside ZIP files, the group targets employees who unknowingly launch the malware. PlugX is a virus known as a remote action Trojan and was first identified in 2012 when it targeted government institutions. It allows remote users to conduct data theft or deny permission to target organizations.

While the motive behind these continuous attacks is still unclear, the sophistication in which they are carried out is worrisome. PKPLUG Is the common name for the group suspected of conducting these attacks.

Did the Chinese Government Target CrowdStrike in 2019?

Cybersecurity provider CrowdStrike reported that Chinese state-sponsored hacking in 2019 equaled the efforts of North Korea, Russia, Iran and Vietnam put together.

“Tensions between the United States and China escalated sharply last year as Washington slapped heavy tariffs on huge swathes of Chinese exports and cracked down on some of the country's top tech companies, including Huawei and ZTE (ZTCOF). Cybertheft is one of the key US complaints against China in the dispute over trade and technology,” according to CNN Business.
