With Russia appearing in headlines about cyberattacks against everything from the Olympics to election tampering, it may surprise you to learn that China poses an even greater threat.

Which Countries Are Most Active in Cyberespionage?

With the impending elections, the news and public discourse have concentrated on state-sponsored cyberespionage ordered by the Kremlin. Experts warn that Beijing poses a much greater risk and has implemented numerous cyberattacks against businesses, organizations, and government agencies in the United States.

In 2013, China targeted Southeast Asian countries, according to The Next Web, which interviewed cybersecurity experts in Palo Alto. Not surprisingly, the targeted nations — Taiwan, Vietnam, Myanmar and Indonesia — have uneasy relationships with the imposing communist nation. Researchers have linked six cyberespionage attacks against Southeast Asian targets to a single group in China.

How Are They Infiltrating U.S. Companies and Organizations?

Many of the attacks use PlugX malware hidden in ZIP files to embed code on an infected device. At a signal from the responsible hackers, the malware launches a cyberattack designed to shut down your network.

PlugX allows remote users to perform malicious and data theft routines on a system without the user’s permission or authorization. Apart from compromising system security, PlugX’s routines could lead to further information theft if systems are left unchecked,” according to Trendmicro.

The sophistication and coordination indicate a concerted, widespread effort. For example, hackers created customized Android malware based on observing their targets patiently over an extended period. That suggests a group with deep pockets and stable backing.

More recently, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike stated that it saw a resurgence in China-based attacks on American businesses and that the trend doesn’t appear to be slowing.
