Top 5 eBook Reader Apps to Suit Any Avid Reader’s Preferences

ereader appsApple’s iPad has become one of the most popular devices used to read eBooks. For avid readers, the iPad offers an extensive variety of eBook reader apps to suit your reading style preference. Here’s the top 5 eBook reader apps available on the App Store:

1.     iBooks

iBooks comes pre-installed on the iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone, which makes it one of the most commonly used eBook reader apps on iOS. Apple designed iBooks with a strong focus on aesthetics and user interface, however, the app’s functionality isn’t as efficient as other eBook reader apps available.

For example, iBooks doesn’t scale well as your eBook library grows. The app works reasonably well when you’re downloading less than 100 books, but it’s unmanageable once you’ve downloaded 100+ books. When browsing through extensive amounts of books in “Bookshelf” mode, iBooks becomes fairly slow with performance issues.

Although the app’s functionality is lacking, there’s a plus side to iBooks: the iBooks Store. The familiar interface makes it simple to search for content and users can receive free samples for books.

2.     Kobo for iPad

Kobo is a well-designed eBook reader app for users who want to read books on multiple devices. When you download books, the books will be stored on Kobobooks.com’s cloud, so you can access your content on your iPad, iPhone, Windows device, Mac, or Android.

In addition, Kobo includes a social networking feature to post your reading list on Facebook. And if you want to change the eBook font, you can choose from nine scalable fonts, as well as a Sepia tone color scheme and a white and black “night reading” mode.

3.     Barnes & Noble NOOK for iPad

The Barnes & Noble NOOK application is a paid eBook reader app that offers a superior reading experience. The downside? The Barnes & Noble NOOK application requires you to purchase books from the Barnes & Noble website, however, the app is fantastic for those who don’t mind limiting their eBook sources.

With 6 build-in themes for different colors of background and text, the app offers a unique, personalized reading experience. In addition, the app includes a theme editor so you can create your own background and text combinations.

4.     Amazon Kindle for iPad

The Amazon Kindle application offers an extensive variety of paid eBook content, however, the app only works with books purchased from the Kindle Store. Unfortunately, you’re unable to import other file formats, such as PDFs.

While the app is lacking in some areas, the features more than make up for the downfalls. For example, publishers can enable the “X-Ray” feature for books, which allows you to translate text, zoom in on images, and learn more about the book.

5.     Google Play Books for iPad

Google Play Books for iPad is a unique eBook reader app that offers free access to an extensive collection of scanned volumes. The Google Books Library Project scans volumes from classic literature, then the Google Play Books app enables users to view the volumes in original form.

While this occasionally leads to a warped view of the text, most of the books can be viewed in “Flowing Text” or “Scanned Pages” mode. In Flowing Text mode, the illustrations and original typesetting are missing, however, the text will be easily readable.
